A lot of Vizio TVs eventually run into the same issue: they have sound but no picture.
There are multiple cases of Vizio TV owners claiming to have experienced this issue, with some stating it’s been an issue for months!
Fortunately, there is a quick solution that should fix about 90% of Vizio TVs that have sound but no picture.
How To Fix An Vizio TV With Sound But No Picture
If your Vizio TV has sound but no picture, you need to soft reset it. To do this, unplug the TV and wait an entire minute. While it’s unplugged, press and hold the power button (on the TV) for 30 seconds straight. After the 60 seconds are up, you can proceed to plug the television back in, and the picture should be fixed!
Power Cycle Your Vizio TV
Although it may seem obvious, unplugging your Vizio Smart TV’s power cord from the wall outlet is the best way to get the picture back on your television.
But it will only work if you wait an entire minute after unplugging the power cable, so be patient.
While the TV is unplugged, you’ll want to press and hold the power button on your television (not remote control) for 30 seconds.
This helps remove any leftover power inside the TV’s capacitors and allows the TV to soft reset itself!
NOTE: This is more effective than just turning the TV on and off.
After waiting 60 seconds, plug the TV back in, and you should see the picture on your television again!

Check The HDMI Connections
Another way to fix picture problems on your Vizio TV is to check the HDMI connections.
Make sure that every HDMI wire is tight on the television and the device you’re using to stream!
It’s an issue that’s becoming more and more common with the release of new streaming devices, and there are a few different issues that could arise.
HDMI connection issues are caused by various reasons:
- Loose HDMI wire
- Faulty HDMI cable
- Broken HDMI port
Once your connection is secured, double check your on the right input source and the picture should show perfectly!
NOTE: If you don’t know which input to use, check the back of your television and see which port the cord is plugged into.
Test The Backlight
If you’re still hearing audio without any picture from your television, it may be an issue with one of the LED power strips on the backlight.
To find out if this is the case, turn your television on and follow these instructions.
You want to grab a flashlight (the one on your phone is fine) and shine it close to the TVs black screen.
If you see a dark image, it means your screen is on but the backlight is broken.
Here’s a video guide to replacing the Vizio TV LED Strips:
Oddly enough, this happened to the first laptop I ever owned. It worked, but the backlight gave out and I’d only be able to see it with a flashlight!
If you determine it to be a backlight issue, I’d recommend contacting Vizio TV support for further assistance.

Screen Issues
If your backlight is working properly, you may be having issues with the screen of your Vizio TV.
There are multiple different types of issues you may be having, and they can be difficult to diagnose and fix, so it’s best to contact Vizio TV support for further assistance.
Whether the screen is flickering or showing static, they’ll be able to identify the issue better than a non-professional.
Software Updates
Not having your Vizio Smart TV updated can cause an array of issues, no picture being one of them.
While your Vizio TV should be automatically updating, you may have to update it manually:
- Press the Menu icon on your remote.
- Select System then Check for Updates.
- Choose Check for Updates.
Your TV will automatically search for any available updates and install the newest version available.
You can also manually update your Vizio TV by entering your model number on Vizio’s support page, downloading the update onto a USB flash drive, then inserting the USB into your TV.

Factory reset your Vizio TV
If you could get your TV on by unplugging and replugging it into the wall, you should factory reset the TV to avoid any future problems.
With a remote
- Open the Menu by clicking the “Menu” button.
- Click the “System” settings in the menu.
- Find “Reset & Admin” then click “Reset TV to Factory Defaults.”
You may be asked for a code when doing this; if so, the default code is four zeros, or 0000.
Without a remote
- Find the power button on your TV – this may be on the left, right, or bottom of your device, depending on the model.
- Press and hold the volume down and source buttons simultaneously while the TV is on.
- After a few seconds, your TV will ask you to click and hold the input button.
- Make sure you hold the input button for at least 10 seconds.
This will revert your Vizio TV to its settings when you first bought it, fixing any potential firmware issues.
Contact Vizio support (or another professional)
Still no luck? Try contacting Vizio customer support.
They may offer more help for your particular model or even have a recommendation not listed in this post, such as replacing internal components like your power supply.
If the issue can be resolved over the phone or by sending your TV in for service, the Vizio customer service staff may be able to assist you.
Check your Vizio warranty
If all else fails, you should check your Vizio warranty and see what comes from it.
You’ll have to provide information on what’s happening with your TV, and they’ll determine what the next steps are.
Here’s what could come from your warranty:
- Nothing (warranty doesn’t cover the issue)
- Repair (send the TV in to get fixed or they may come right to your house to fix it)
- Replacement (you may receive a new TV depending on what happened)
It’s worth a shot if you’ve tried everything else on this list with no solution. Hope this helped!
